Shore School

Purchased by the Shore School in 2009, the historic Graythwaite Estate in North Sydney has been redeveloped as an expansion of the School’s adjacent campus, and comprises the conservation and adaptive reuse of Graythwaite House and its outbuildings, the construction of new educational buildings and the enhancement of the site’s parkland setting.

Tanner Kibble Denton Architects completed a conservation management plan for the site in 2011, which guided the masterplan and provided conservation policies and heritage design parameters for the development. As an historic nineteenth century residential estate, later bequeathed to the State in 1916 for use as a convalescent home for returning World War I soldiers, Graythwaite has a layered history and is of social significance to the local North Sydney community. The redevelopment required the sensitive consideration of considerable community interest and complex heritage issues.

The final design was jointly prepared in association with PD Mayoh Architects and Taylor Brammer Landscape Architects.
