The Australian National University

Mount Stromlo Observatory is home to the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics and is a part of the Australian National University. Established in the 1920s, the Observatory is culturally significant for the history of scientific research on the site and as one of the oldest federal institutions in the ACT.

The bushfires that devastated Canberra in January 2003, swept across Mount Stromlo virtually destroying the Observatory with only the masonry and telescope walls left standing. While the project restored the building exteriors to their general appearance before the fires, providing contemporary, open and light filled interior spaces suitable for the schools administrative and business functions was also an important outcome of the adaptation. The reconfigured building interior includes a generous reception area, office areas, meeting rooms, a high technology resource library and a large common room.
